Tribute

Elmer Sheridan Garlets was born in Arkansas City, Kansas in November of 1932, to the late Virgil and Clara Garlets. Elmer passed away in Alameda on May 27, 2018 at the age of 85.  He leaves behind his son, Ronald and sister, Lois Tokar. He was proceeded in death by his daughter, Beverly and beloved wife, Nancy.

Shortly after the U.S. entered WWII, the family started to migrate west; harvesting crops and finding work on farms when and where ever possible. Their intended goal was to reach Oregon,  instead the family ended up in Northern California’s Sonoma/Napa region.  In 1950 Elmer joined the U.S. Army where he trained as a Combat Engineer at Fort Belvoir, Virginia with the U.S. Army Corp. of Engineer’s. Elmer served in Korea and was discharged in 1953. He eventually went to work for the Federal Government, as Department of Defense Police, Army mail messenger, and forklift operator prior to his retirement. Even after he retired from Federal Service, he continued to serve the community as a crossing guard for at many of Alameda’s middle schools, most notably Lum School on Otis Drive.
